January 2008 Janine is an AFRICAN FINALIST for Vukani Janine Myburgh, current second year student get selected as CONTINENTAL finalist for the prestigious Vukani / South African Fashion Designers Agency (SAFDA) competition. This is the 5th year that students’ from the NORTH WEST SCHOOL OF DESIGN get selected for this nationwide African competition. ![]()
February 2008 Gert-Johan Coetzee official designer for SA celebrity, Sandy Ngema Gert-Johan Coetzee, graduate student (class of 2004&05) gets bestowed the honor of a lifetime in being selected as official designer for Sandy Ngema for the fourth (4th) season of Strictly come Dancing. Local newspaper, the Klerksdorp Record and Noordwes Beeld acclaims his successes thus far. ![]() ![]()
February 2008 Bridal Africa 2008, 2 nationwide finalists! Graduate student, *Monique Deale (class of 2005&06) and current second year student, FX Prins get selected as nationwide finalists for Bridal Africa 2008. Bridal Africa serves as a platform for up-and-coming fashion designers to make their name “seen” in the fast paced world of fashion. The gala event will take place on 7 and 8 March 2008 at Gallagher Estate in Johannesburg. * Monique was also selected in 2006, as semi-finalist for this competition. March 2008 Student design shines! Karien Pretorius, graduate student, (class of 2007&2008) tailored jacket, appears in Plus (supplement to Beeld newspaper), as she designed jacket for Bennie de Jager of music group, “Straatligkinders.” for the Annual “AKTV Lier Awards” ![]()
April 2008 NORTH WEST SCHOOL OF DESIGN – Photographic Expo Premiere! A very first for the North West School of Design! The North West School of Design hosts their FIRST PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPO of photographs of students completing the Photography Course. Carla Marx, from Leeudoringstad walks away with the laurels, as presenting the “Best Portfolio” at the event. This was attended by members of the public, and students received great acclaim for their photographs. A photo in the collection of Carla Marx, appears in the Klerksdorp Record.
April 2008 Graduate Designer and socialite join forces Uyanda Mbuli and graduate student (class of 2004&2005) Gert-Johan Coetzee join forces, in Diamond Face Couture, dressing the high flyers of the social scene. Gert-Johan Coetzee, is the designer behind Sandy Ngema “Strictly come dancing” fame. The Sowetan (16 April 2008) takes this story further in their article, “Glamour and style.” Gert-Johan has won numerous awards contributing to the fashion industry in South Africa.
August 2008 Designer Gown winner announcement Brian Kenneth, local singer from Klerksdorp walks away with a “designer jacket” custom-made for him by Marina Alberts, Head of Department – Clothing Design. In the picture, Brian with Marina and Nelmarie, the student who sold him the winning raffle ticket.
September 2008 Front Page Dress José de Canha, Graduate student (class of 2002&2003) & (Designer of the Year 2003) gets bestowed the honor of a lifetime with his design gracing the front page of the Klerksdorp Record whereby the new Miss Klerksdorp 2008, Anjé Steyger wears his dress at the Gala Event.
September 2008 Corsets Galore! All finalists in the Miss Klerksdorp 2008 pageant wear corsets that have been designed by current Clothing Design and Technology students. The Klerksdorp Records places two photographs of corsets that were designed by students, Yvonne Jansen van Vuuren and Alicia Erasmus.
October 2008 Gert-Johan in “Get it” Graduate student, Gert-Johan Coetzee (class of 2004&2005) featured in “Get-it magazine” – Northcliff-Randburg area in their article, “Fashion Savvy” by Ann Baker. Gert-Johan Coetzee is the designer behind Sandy Ngema, co-presenter of “Strictly come Dancing”, and also joined forces with Uyanda Mbuli in launching, “Diamond Face Couture.” *See April 2008-1. ![]()
November 2008 Student Finalists! In a competition launched, by FTV, and the “Steinhoff Summer Cup 2009”, eleven out of fourteen nationwide finalists have been chosen from the NORTH WEST SCHOOL OF DESIGN. Students had to submit fashion sketches according to the theme of “Golden Summer”. These finalists had to design and make the garment which will be showcased at the “Steinhoff Summer Cup” on 29 November 2009. The winner of this competition walks away with R10 000 cash, as well as a spread in one of SA’s top fashion magazines. At the NORTH WEST SCHOOL OF DESIGN we all wish the following students the best of luck. Humaira Minty, Ingrid Meyer, Clarien Marais, Nadia Hattingh, Alicia Erasmus, Maggie Khumalo, Nomvuyo Tenza, Kobus Rautenbach, Gustav Kamfer and FX Prins. November 2008 Nationwide Winner! Janine Myburgh, current second year Clothing Design student walks away as the nationwide winner in the Steinhoff Summer Cup 2009. Janine’s design was featured on the front page of the Sunday Times Newspaper on 30 November 2008. Another first for the North West School of Design on the same day, was when Gustav Kamfer, also finalist for the competition walked away with “best head-piece/hat” for the day for this competition. Other prizes that Janine also scooped was a trip aboard the FTV yacht, R10 000 cash and a spread in the Cleo magazine. ![]()
