Students and Graduates Achievements
February 2005 “True Love” magazine features ex-graduated student Mercia Matlhaku, (Designer of the Year 2002) and graduate from class of 2001 & 2002 features in “True Love” magazine as up-and coming fashion designer.
April 2005 Bridal Africa semi-finalists One graduated student, (Mari Grobler) and one first year student (Bruna Tovela) get selected by Bridal Africa as semi-finalists for their nationwide bridal competition that will be hosted later this year.
April 2005 Coverage by the “Star newspaper” Two second year students, Joanna Browne and Gert-Johan Coetzee receive coverage in the “Star” newspaper for the forthcoming 11th Vukani / South African Fashion Designers Agency competition, in the article “Africa in Fashion land”.
May 2005 Vukani awards shine on North West School of Design students Gert-Johan Coetzee and Sophie Sidu, walks away with prizes at the 11th Annual Vukani / South African Fashion Designers Agency competition. Gert-Johan is selected as “Haute Couture / High Fashion 2005” winner, and Sophi Sidu, as “Innovative Designer 2005” winner at the competition.
May 2005 Employment beckons two up-and coming student designers Two other finalists for the 11th Annual Vukani gets approached by Anneh Getaneh, owner of African Mosaique in Johannesburg as designers once qualified. Anneh Getaneh, is a former international supermodel and founder and managing director of African Mosaique – this international enterprise focuses on fashion and culture. Her ranges also got showcased at the Kennedy Centre in Washington DC, the Fashion Institute in New York, as well as the as at the “Carousel de Louvre” in Paris, France.
June 2005 “July fever …” Television presenter, Sandy Ngema approaches, Gert-Johan Coetzee to design her outfit for the July horse-racing handicap. The design received coverage in the “YOU” magazine of 14 July 2005.
July 2005 “Students design for Potchefstroom Beauty Academy” Five full-time students of the NORTH WEST SCHOOL OF DESIGN got approached by the Potchefstroom Beauty Academy to exclusively design garments for their ten finalists to wear. Gert-Johan Coetzee, Joanna Browne, Fanie Jansen van Vuuren, Anel Botha and Nadia Lohann are over the moon with excitement.
July 2005 Student designs garments for Miss Klerksdorp 2005 Nadia Lohann, current second year student at the NORTH WEST SCHOOL OF DESIGN, gets approached by local newspaper, the Record (with a reader total of 30 000 – 40 000) readers to design garments for the 2005 Miss Klerksdorp finalists. ![]()
September 2005 Laborie / Bridex Cape 2005 finalist First year, bursary student, Lelani Blignaut gets selected as nationwide finalist for the Laborie / Bridex Cape Young Designer Fashion Show. Only twenty finalists throughout South Africa get chosen, and Lelani makes it to the top ten in South Africa.
September 2005 Accolade for Sylvester Falata Current, second year student, Sylvester Falata assists in presenting a range for the “African Mosaique 2005/06” collection. The Citizen of 17 September 2005 reports on this story in their article, “A mosaique of richness.”
November 2005 Graduation Fashion Show hits the newspapers Various newspapers in the North West Province, including the Mafikeng Mail in Mafikeng and the Rustenburg Herald in Rustenburg features photographs of the success of the Annual Graduation Fashion Show 2005.
December 2005 Lelani features Potchefstroom Herald Lelani Blignaut (bursary student) and current first year student, receives coverage in the Potchefstoom Herald after her placement in the Top 10 for the Laborie / Bridex Cape 2005 Fashion Show. * see September 2005. ![]() |
